The April meeting for the Comox Valley Horticultural Society features ecological restoration specialist David Polster as a guest speaker.

Polster works with living plant material in reclamation techniques for unstable slopes.

Natural processes have been restoring disturbed sites for millions of years. Polster is a plant ecologist with more than 40 years of experience in vegetation studies, ecological restoration and invasive species management. He has developed a wide variety of restoration techniques for mines, industrial developments and steep/unstable slopes, as well as for the re-establishment of riparian and aquatic habitats.

Polster is the NW regional representative on the board of the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER), and was recently awarded the prestigious John Rieger Award, named after the society’s first president, for making a significant impact in the theory, practice and public awareness of restoration.

Private plant sale

Monday, April 16 is also Comox Valley Horticultural Society’s “Members Only Plant Sale” at the Filberg Centre, 411 Anderton Ave. in Courtenay.

Members can invite a guest to tag along at no charge.

Memberships are still available for $20 single, $30 family, and new this year, you can sign up online at comoxvalleyhortsociety.ca. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Non-members are welcome to attend for $5.

Public plant sale

CV Hort’s Spring Free Admission Plant Sale is not far off, on Saturday, April 28 at the Filberg.

The sale runs from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Come early for best selection. Savour locally grown diverse collections, unique varieties and mysterious wonders that will do well in your garden. Bring a tote to carry your treasures home.
