For its 70th birthday, Chevrolet gave the world an electrified AWD Corvette.

And it’s sure to be appealing to septuagenarian drivers who would still like to drive like they are 20 again.

The advanced electrified propulsion system, in addition to its 6.2-litre LT2 Small Block V-8, will take it from zero to 100 km/h in around 2.5 seconds, making it the fastest production Corvette in history.

The V-8 puts 495 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft of torque to the rear axle. That’s complemented by an electric motor that channels an additional 160 horsepower and 125 lb.ft. of torque through the front wheels via a 1.9 kWh battery pack which is located between the seats.

In total, E-Ray produces a combined 655 horsepower from both the electric motor and small block V-8.

The intelligent eAWD system constantly monitors the road surface, adapting to meet traction conditions and driver needs. Interestingly, the battery is charged mostly via regenerative energy from coasting and braking, as well as during normal driving.

The coupe version will set you back $150,000-plus and the convertible, $161,000.

See the Corvette E-Ray at the Vancouver International Auto Show, one of more than 200 vehicles showcased at the Vancouver Convention Centre, Wednesday, March 20 through Sunday, March 24.
