'We were thrilled': Island boardgame firm funds new game in 24 hours

Cardboard Tiger Games raised almost $11,000 on Kickstarter to fund its new game called Best in Show Dashing Dogs

A Victoria-based company is set to produce a new board game after shattering its Kickstarter goal in under 24 hours.

On Aug. 15, Cardboard Tiger Games set a $7,000 goal on the crowd-funding website that it hoped to meet in 30 days. The company’s co-founder Annabel Youens admitted she was unsure whether people would like the game.

“You have so many nerves when you put yourself out there for any kind of new project,” she said.

But when Youens woke up the next day, the company had raised a whopping $10,709.

“We were thrilled," she said. "It’s just so exciting to have supportive people who ... believe in you.”

The game, called Best in Show Dashing Dogs, turns players into dog trainers who must guide pups through a series of challenges while vying for the best-in-show title. The concept obviously proved popular among its 170 Kickstarter backers who will receive a copy of the game before anyone else next May.

The company's other co-founder Mark Stope, who received an Emmy-nomination for his work on the children’s show Lost Ollie, designed the game’s graphics.

“I’m so lucky to be working with somebody who is such a skilled artist,” said Youens. “He’s got such a great eye.”

Cardboard Tiger will use the Kickstarter funding to produce 10,000 copies of the game, which it will sell on Amazon. It will also donate a portion of sales to the Wildlife Conservation Society – a non-profit that protects animals and conserve wildlife habitats around the world.

“One of my favourite memories is camping on Saltspring and hearing the kids just laughing away at the table with they were playing the game," recalled Youens. "That made my heart so happy.”
