The VIEX is becoming a fall fair.

Nanaimo’s Vancouver Island Exhibition announced Friday, Feb. 2, that it will be moving its event a month later than in recent years, to Sept. 20-22.

According to a press release from the VIEX, the fair changed its dates in 2019 to be able to partner with its preferred midway operator, West Coast Amusements, but the date change meant that the past few years, the VIEX has been on the same weekend as the Comox Valley Exhibition, which has led to fewer entries in livestock and 4-H divisions.

Since the agricultural component of the fair is so important to the VIEX organizers, this year, the exhibition will go back to its roots as a fall fair, 130 years after it was first held in October 1894.

“The VIEX recognizes this change has a significant impact to how the park operates in the fall and is committed to planning the event with careful thought and consideration given to the other community organizations that will be using the park on this weekend,” the press release noted. “In order to ensure that all activities and events are accommodated, the VIEX will continue to work closely and collaboratively with the City of Nanaimo and other community user groups that use Beban Park.”
