A 92-year-old Vancouver Island woman is out on the water rowing almost every day.
Bet Harmsworth usually goes out from March to September at Sidney鈥檚 Marina Park Marina.
鈥淚 just love being on the water,鈥� Harmsworth said. 鈥淚 go when the weather is good and when the tide is good.鈥�
Harmsworth has now been boating for over 60 years.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been a continual part of my life,鈥� she added. 鈥淵ou have to have a lot of experience to still be doing it at my age. It鈥檚 my silly habit. I鈥檝e had boats for most of my life, and I鈥檓 not giving up yet.鈥�
Bet usually goes out alone, but she鈥檚 sometimes joined by her husband Harry, who is also 92 years old.
鈥淚鈥檓 six months younger than my husband, so he鈥檚 much older,鈥� Harmsworth said with a laugh. 鈥淟uckily, I married a fellow who likes boats too. I sit at the front and my husband rows from the back.鈥�
Bet and Harry will be celebrating their 70th wedding on Aug. 15.
鈥淲e鈥檙e very blessed,鈥� Bet said. 鈥淭hings have worked out well.鈥�
They go out in a plastic dinghy named Hang Looser and use an orange juice jar to bail any water that splashes in.
鈥淲e called our first dinghy Hang Loose after we went to Hawaii,鈥� Harry said. 鈥淪o we thought we would call this one Hang Looser.鈥�
