‘My silly habit’: Vancouver Island woman still loves daily rowing at age 92

Bet Harmsworth goes out on the water to row almost every day

A 92-year-old Vancouver Island woman is out on the water rowing almost every day.

Bet Harmsworth usually goes out from March to September at Sidney’s Marina Park Marina.

“I just love being on the water,” Harmsworth said. “I go when the weather is good and when the tide is good.”

Harmsworth has now been boating for over 60 years.

“It’s been a continual part of my life,” she added. “You have to have a lot of experience to still be doing it at my age. It’s my silly habit. I’ve had boats for most of my life, and I’m not giving up yet.”

Bet usually goes out alone, but she’s sometimes joined by her husband Harry, who is also 92 years old.

“I’m six months younger than my husband, so he’s much older,” Harmsworth said with a laugh. “Luckily, I married a fellow who likes boats too. I sit at the front and my husband rows from the back.”

Bet and Harry will be celebrating their 70th wedding on Aug. 15.

“We’re very blessed,” Bet said. “Things have worked out well.”

They go out in a plastic dinghy named Hang Looser and use an orange juice jar to bail any water that splashes in.

“We called our first dinghy Hang Loose after we went to Hawaii,” Harry said. “So we thought we would call this one Hang Looser.”
