Dormant Duncan theatre prepares to reopen just in time for Christmas

Cowichan region poised to get its only cinema back as it roars into the holiday season with 'Mufasa The Lion King'

Movie lovers in Duncan will be getting the best Christmas gift as Duncan Cinemas, formerly known as Caprice Theatre, will be showing its first two movies of 2024 with Mufasa The Lion King, and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 on Dec. 20. There are three different showings of each film scheduled for opening day with show times listed for the two above films up until Boxing Day.

The Caprice Twin Theatre officially closed up shop on Dec. 30, 2023. The theatre, located at 404 Duncan St., which was originally built in the 1980s, was taken over by Golin Cinemas Inc. earlier this year. Golin also owns the Capitol 6 in Victoria.

While the doors are still locked as the rest of the renovations get finished up and the signage has not officially changed, all signs point to local film buffs not having to drive to Namaimo or Victoria for some hot buttery popcorn and a magical movie theatre experience in the coming year. According to the theatre's website this Friday is the day that local film buffs have been waiting for since the year began.

The curtain will rise for Mufasa at 1 p.m. and for Sonic 3 at 1:20 p.m. on opening day. For all showtimes visit .
