Wild Ravens capture Island championship

The North Island Wild Ravens U14 field lacrosse team captured the Island championship at a Feb. 12 tournament at the University of Victoria turf fields.

“This is the first time in North Island Field Lacrosse (history) that the banner has come home,” said U14 team manager Marnie Evans. “(We have) some very proud players and families.”

The Wild Ravens, comprised of players from the Comox Valley and Campbell River, defeated Oceanside 13-5 despite harsh weather conditions. “What a rainy, windy miserable day, but the boys didn’t let that interfere with bringing home the banner,” Evans said.

Graham Evans, Tanner Jones and Jordan Balon (all of the Comox Valley) each scored three goals while Sam Kussauer (Comox Valley) netted a pair. Brady Garrett (Comox Valley) and Anthony Vigneron (Campbell River) scored one each.

Assists went to Vigneron, Bailey Robinson (Campbell River) and Balon.

The Wild Ravens are now preparing for the B.C. Tier 2 championships, Feb. 25-27 at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.

They play pool games against Delta and North Okanagan on Feb. 25 and Richmond on Feb. 26, with playoffs on Feb. 27. Fans can follow the action at www.bclacrosse.com.

In other news, the Wild Ravens U16 squad travelled to Nanaimo last weekend to play eight minutes of league-mandated overtime and lost, thereby ending their season. The two four-minute OT halves were necessary after the two teams met in late January.

Nanaimo won the first game 9-7 but the second game ended in a 9-9 tie that had a discrepancy in the outcome, and no OT was played at that time. The commissioner ruled the teams would play the extra eight minutes to decide the issue.
