Towhees take second at high school rugby 7s championship

 

 

 

In an all-Island championship final, the Shawnigan Lake School Stags defeated defending champion G.P. Vanier Towhees 31-5 Sunday to capture the 2011 British Columbia Secondary Schools’ Rugby Union Sevens championship.

Shawnigan went undefeated during the two-day tournament in Vancouver, which featured 18 Triple-A and Double-A high school teams from across the province.

The Stags were 2-0 in pool play with victories over West Vancouver and Robert Bateman. In the Cup quarter-finals, Shawnigan downed Argyle 36-12 then edged Oak Bay High 31-17 in the semifinal round.

The Towhees won their pool games 40-10 over Semiahmoo and 29-12 over Glenlyon Norfolk on day one. They defeated Sir Charles Tupper 17-5 on day two then knocked off Carson Graham 17-5 in the Cup semifinals.

Third place went to Oak Bay after the Island outfit defeated Carson Graham 24-5 in the Cup consolation round. The Plate was lifted by Earl Marriott after a thrilling 17-14 victory over Cowichan. The Bowl went to hosts St. George’s and the Shield was captured by Robert Bateman.
