The Brick House Betties are ready to hit big and take the Comox Valley by storm

The region’s only roller derby team invites everyone to their first home game in 4 years

Get ready for an adrenaline-filled night at the Comox Valley Curling Centre on Saturday (June 3).

“It’s a long time coming and it feels amazing,” says Brick House Betties roller Teenah LeBlanc, a.k.a Legs Benny. “I’ve been looking forward to this moment and we are all so excited to have the chance to play home.”

After a four-year hiatus caused by the pandemic and various challenges, the Brick House Betties are back in town and ready to face off against the Greater Vancouver Roller Derby Association.

Eager to lace up their skates, the 15-member team recognizes that their opponent will offer a worthy challenge.

“They are good, and their association has many teams,” adds LeBlanck. “They have skaters playing in beginner-level teams all the way to Team Canada. They are gonna be sending an intermediate-level team so it is going to be a good challenge.

“We have a lot of skill in our team this year and I hope we’re gonna have a really good match. It’s going to be fun.”

The non-profit and volunteer-run association invites children and adults alike to this family-friendly competition.

Beverages, snacks, door prizes, and a 50/50 draw as well as halftime fun for kids, will keep everyone entertained throughout the night.

The team kindly requests that attendees bring their own chairs and mentions that the available sideline space will be limited.

The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the game will start at 7:15 p.m. A recommended cash donation of $10 per adult and $5 per child (free for kids under 5) is appreciated and will be collected at the entrance.

Leblanc said that any donation goes a long way in helping the team to continue playing.

“Historically, the games at home are a loss for us. We do it because we love it. Thanks to this year’s sponsors, they helped us cover a lot of the event’s cost,” says LeBlanc. “All the money goes to help us with renting practice space, moving around the Island and mainland, as well as allowing us to play more.”

If anyone from the audience catches the bug while attending the event, LeBlanc says there is a standing invite to join the club.

“If ever you’re interested, contact us and you could potentially join the team,” adds LeBlanc. “We will teach everything, regardless of your experience level - even if you have never put on skates.”
