The Atom house Comox Clothing Smurfs travelled through the pre-Christmas snow last month to attend the Campbell River Minor Hockey Association’s Atom Recreational Tournament. The Smurfs had a great tourney, winning all their games and bringing home gold medals.
In the round robin on Dec. 20-21, the Smurfs faced three Campbell River teams. First up were the Hawks, who were shut out by Smurf goalie Jordan Dewhirst, while Comox scored three goals. Next came a tough game against the Cougars, which the Smurfs won 3-2. Last up were the Sharks, who got smurfed 5-2.
In the semifinal, the Smurfs faced the Campbell River Seals, winning 5-2. Nolan Stewart had an outstanding game, scoring four goals. The Smurfs battled the Campbell River Cougars a second time in the tournament final. They were two well-matched teams that played hard to a final score of 1-0 for the Smurfs.
“The entire Smurfs team pulled together, showing excellent teamwork and effort through all of their tournament games, which paid off in gold,” a team spokesperson said.
Goals and assists were made by many players throughout the five games, reflecting the good teamwork, including Cairo Tomlin, Alistair Brown, Nolan Stewart, Cayden Smith, Kenton Doust, Darrin Lessard, Andrew Chartrand, Tyson Tufts and Julia Bood.
