The Comox Valley wrestlers participated in the Alberni Classic wrestling tournament, which attracted more than 500 wrestlers from 68 teams across the Island and province.

Island secondary school wrestlers used the tournament as an opportunity to tune up for the Island championships.

The Vanier senior girls secured a runner-up finish in the team competition, thanks to an individual gold medal by Alice Clements and strong performances from the rest of the Vanier squad.

Alexis Action clinched a berth in the finals and earned a silver medal in her first tournament back from injury. Jolina Healey took third place in her division, and Kylie Cameron-Patterson won a hard-fought match for fifth place, solidifying the team’s position as runner-up to champion Maple Ridge.

The remainder of the SD 71 Squad also had a successful weekend, securing several podium finishes in the highly competitive field at the Alberni Tournament. Max Korthuis (Cumberland) and Kane Acton (Cumberland) both continued their stellar seasons with silver medals. Tristen Beaudrey (Self Design) earned a bronze medal. Jacob Price (Vanier) and Ben Howlett (Vanier) finished fourth, while Ryan Nasadyk (Highland) and Quinn Hoar (Isfeld) each achieved fifth-place finishes.

The secondary school wrestlers returned to action at the Island championships in Victoria on Feb. 10 for a chance to secure a spot in the provincial wrestling championships in Vancouver. Results were unknown at press time.
