At the end of October, rugby fans gathered at Cumberland Village Park to celebrate the Comox Valley Kickers RFC’s only home doubleheader.
The Kickers women kicked off the day with an impressive 82-12 win against the James Bay Athletic Association (JBAA), showing a strong return to form after their previous matchup. Cali McKay racked up five tries with remarkable agility and strength, while Sophia Julien followed closely behind, adding four tries of her own, showing excellent field awareness and speed. Lauren Sargent, Kristin Johnson, Amelia Gallow, Daris Forberg, and Lillian Hart each contributed with one try, reflecting the depth and cohesion across the team. McKay added 6 successful conversions.
The Kickers showcased a strengthened scrum, holding their own against the opposition and gaining valuable territory. Line speed was notably sharper this game, allowing them to shut down JBAA’s offensive attempts early and maintain a strong defensive presence throughout the match. The synergy among forwards and backs translated into fluid ball movement and sustained pressure, keeping JBAA on the back foot.
“This game was about executing the basics well—strong scrums, quick line speed, and support play. We’ve been working hard to build on those fundamentals, and today it all came together, said Kickers Women’s Coach JB Nikkel. “Every player contributed to this win, and it’s exciting to see the potential we’re unlocking.”
In the men’s matchup, the Kickers faced a tough challenge from Port Alberni Black Sheep, resulting in a 10-43 loss. Despite the score, the game was marked by fierce competitiveness and big tackles, with tries from Craig Rice and Derek McCubbin. Throughout the game, the Kickers managed to create offensive opportunities and defended strongly in phases, but Port Alberni capitalized on key errors and converted them into points, which ultimately made the difference. Despite the loss, the Kickers men showed notable improvements in their overall play, particularly in their defensive organization and ability to retain possession under pressure.
“Our men played with a lot of heart today,” said the Kickers men’s coach Tim Quek. “Port Alberni brought a tough, physical game, and while the score didn't go our way, I'm proud of the effort and commitment our guys showed. We had some great moments, and it’s clear we’re making strides in the right direction. We’re learning from each game, sharpening our defense, and I’m confident the results will follow as we continue to improve.”
The crowd was treated to exciting plays and competitive energy from both Kickers teams, with players leaving it all on the field. The event showcased the unity and passion for rugby that thrives in the Comox Valley. The success of the day was made possible by the club’s dedicated volunteers, whose efforts behind the scenes ensured a memorable experience for all.
The event was filled with excitement on and off the field, featuring a beer garden, BBQ, merchandise sales, and a sponsor appreciation celebration to honour the club’s 2024/2025 supporters. The Kickers extended special thanks to their generous sponsors: Courtenay Nissan, The Buddery House, RLR Lawyers, Beaufort Ave Pub, Nelson Roofing & Sheet Metal, and Mowi, whose backing plays an essential role in the club's ongoing success.
“Sponsorship is the backbone of our club; it allows us to grow, improve, and keep rugby accessible to our community. Our sponsors’ support enables us to provide opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels, build meaningful connections, and foster a love for the game, says Kickers director of sponsorship Jess Nikkel. "We are so grateful for their support."
