The Port Alberni Bombers have taken the lead in their best-of-seven series against the Comox Valley Glacier Kings after winning Game 1 of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) playoffs.
The Bombers hosted the game on Wednesday, Feb. 26 and picked up a 4-0 shutout.
Despite outshooting the Glacier Kings 18-5 in the first period — and despite a four-minute powerplay — the Bombers couldn't get anything past Comox goaltender Aaron Prichette.
But the floodgates opened in the second period with Port Alberni's Leim Smith scoring a powerplay goal, followed by goals from Grayson Salmon and Kenneth Boychuk. In the third period, Kash Nicklin added one more marker to give the home team a 4-0 win.
Prichette made 35 saves throughout the evening, while Port Alberni goaltender Evan Grant stopped all 15 shots he faced.
The next game in the series will take place on Friday evening (Feb. 28) at the Comox Valley Sports Centre. Opening face-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
The two teams will return to the Alberni Valley Multiplex for Game 3 on Sunday evening (March 2), with the opening face-off scheduled an hour earlier than usual, at 6 p.m.
