Comox Valley United's Div. 3A entry in the Vancouver Island Soccer League begins its quest for the George Pearkes Challenge Cup this Sunday in Victoria.

United, in seventh place in Div. 3A, meets Lakehill Whitecaps, who sit second in Div. 4A. Given the disparity in divisions, statistics don't really set the stage for this match.

United is 3-10-1 with 17 goals for and 38 goals against while the Whitecaps are 10-3-3 with 35 goals for and 18 goals against. The winner will advance to face the Fernwood Socialists, the last place team in Div. 3B, at a time and place TBA.

This past Sunday, United was in Victoria where they played to a 2-2 draw with Div. 3A cellar-dwellers Maynard West in a league game. Tyler Ostapovich and Scott Vickers scored for Maynard West; Comox Valley goal scorers were not available at press time.

Meanwhile, Div. 2 Comox Valley United had no problem with the bottom-feeders in their division on Saturday as they flayed the visiting FC Sagres 8-1.

Luke Phye and Gary Smith led the assault with two goals each while Nick Marinus, Jeff Howe, Brian Gage and Roch Delorme netted one each. Tyler Lamberton replied for Sagres.

United, who are 10th in their division, are in Victoria tomorrow to take on fifth-place Prospect Lake Lakers.
