The Breakers women's hockey team have had a busy start to the new year, posting a tie, win and loss.
The ladies hit the road Jan. 15 to face the Parksville Shooters. The Breakers opened and closed the scoring with two goals from Jess Sekulich (Expedia CruiseShipCenters) and came away with a 2-2 tie.
The following weekend the Breakers faced the Courtenay Whalers for the first time this season. The two teams had many chances going back and forth on the ice, when the first goal came from Teresa Fisher (Mike Fisher Realty) assisted by Stef Hart (Thomas Hart Contracting). Fisher then recorded her second of the night a few minutes later with an assist from Steph Murdock. Tammy Rodgers ended the first period with a goal off a rebound shot from Sekulich.
Even though the Whalers had many chances, the Breakers were able to hold them off for a second period. The Breakers popped a pair past the Whalers’ netminder in the second frame, with goals coming from Heather Smith, assisted by Teresa Bullock (Van-Isle Millwork & Kitchens) and Kayla Novelli, assisted by Breana Morgan. Barb Callander scored the last goal of the game for the Breakers, burying a Smith rebound for a 6-1 Breakers' win.
The very next day the Breakers headed to the Alberni Valley to face off against the Panthers. The Breakers netted the first goal of the game from Sekulich’s pass from behind the net to Jamie McCance, who was left wide open in the slot. McCance scored the second goal for the Breakers, assisted by Sekulich and Haley Humphrey, near the end of the second period, tying the game at 2-2.
Despite their efforts, the Breakers were only able to get one more goal from Callander, assisted by Rodgers, leaving the ladies with a 4-3 loss. The Breakers would like to thank their goaltender, Megan Canning, who played outstanding throughout the entire weekend.
They also thank their sponsors, Boston Pizza, Canadian Tire, Mike Fisher of Royal LePage in the Comox Valley, North Island Urology and Quality Foods, for all of their generosity and support.
