The Comox Valley Curling Club hosted another successful ladies bonspiel with their “Slide into the Sunny '60s Sand and Surf" theme held March 4-6 at CVCC.  The emphasis was on Fun in the Sun, and did they ever deliver!

The Saturday night entertainment headliner were the “Stoned Sisters” with lead vocalist Big Momma Donna belting out “I Can’t Get No, Satisfaction” backed by her bosom buddies Lynn, Beth and Audrey.

Sue Taylor’s rink first curled in costume and then sang “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” with help from the whole crowd. This rapturous rink won the silver for Best Costume, as voted by our captivating Cabana Boys Crew of Marty, Pat, Brian, Kirk and Gary. The Best Dressed team was the Sharon Walker rink, featuring Piggy Lois hoisted and carried in on poles by her Hippy sidekicks, anticipating a big Pig Roast finale.

The Best Performance Oscar went to Fran Robinson’s Synchronized Swimmers, who backstroked, kicked and dog paddled to the hit “Mamma Mia” in their elegant costumes and yellow ring buoys.

Mark’s Grill served up an awesome beach barbecue on Saturday night, followed by a Best Picture very special '60s viewing, directed by “Mashed Potato” Mary.

The team from Most Far Away was Team CSI from Hollywood, California.

Many compliments were expressed by the teams for the innovative draw set up by Jumping Jack Flash, who seeded the 28 teams into four events where they stayed and played for the prizes.

The Abalone event champions, sponsored by Lana Ferguson of Verico Vista Bay Mortgages, was the Deb Goodwin rink from CVCC, with 3rd Lonnie Schopp, 2nd Kim Jonsson and lead Lori Ross. It was a great battle until one bad end wiped out Sandra Gallaway’s rink, forcing them to second place.

Third place went to CVCC’s Mary Holden’s rink, a surprising victory over the 2010 Ladies Championship rink of Colleen Robson.

The Beluga event, sponsored by Lynda Hornstein and JR Edgett Excavating, featured all CVCC teams. First place was won by Michele Haider’s rink, with Sylvia Mossey 3rd, Bobbi Turchenek 2nd and lead Deb English. Second place went to Sharon Meeres, third to Mickey Colburn and fourth to Sharon Walker.

The Crab event winners was the CVCC team of Melanie Rait, Mare Michell, Val Schultz and Pat Everett. Kudos to our brand new sponsor and curler, Kirk Campbell of Investors Group, Courtenay.  Second place went to Cindy Brown of CVCC, Third place to the very friendly Nanaimo rink of Joanne Phillips, who outlasted Nancy Riva’s team in a contest of camaraderie and skill.

In the Dolphin event, sponsored by Kim Jonsson of Shearlocks Family Hair Care, the winners were the Allison Watt team of Alysha Wheeldon, Sherry Gray, Andrea Folk and Lynn Dashkewytch.

Second place went to Fran Robinson’s Synchronites, third to Jana Bristol and fourth to Kari Alberti.

"It was a very enjoyable weekend with lots of laughs, great curling and good sportsmanship," an event spokesperson said. "Thanks to Jill, Brent and Rick for their many hours of service, to Jack for his dedication to the draw board, and especially to all the curlers and crew who helped make this such a success."
