Teams came from as far away as the other side of the Pacific Ocean to compete at a college hockey tournament in Nanaimo this past weekend.

Collegiate hockey players hit the ice at the Nanaimo Ice Centre for three days of action at the inaugural Tom Harris University Showcase from Friday to Sunday, Jan. 5-7.

The Vancouver Island University Mariners hockey team hosted the University of Victoria Vikes, Simon Fraser University Red Leafs, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Trojans, Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder and the Korea University Tigers.

The Korean team won all its games at the tournament, defeating VIU 4-1 in the feature game on the first day of the tourney Friday, Jan. 5, then going on to crush SFU 10-1 and edge UVic 2-1. Concordia and SAIT also both went a perfect 3-0.

After losing to Korea University, VIU lost 4-1 to Concordia and 5-2 to SAIT.

According to a press release, the Korea University program competes in the eight-team KUSF U-League and also plays in the Korea National Ice Hockey Championship, which it has won eight times since 1971, most recently in 2003.

The showcase tournament is named in memory of Nanaimo businessman and philanthropist Tom Harris.
