The Isfeld Ice will go into this weekend’s Vancouver Island senior boys’ volleyball championship as the no. 1 seed - and they’ll have home-court advantage as well.
The Ice had a couple of tight matches to open the tournament Friday, beating both Brooks from Powell River, and crosstown rivals Highland, in third-set tiebreakers.
They followed those two wins with straight-set victories over the host Gulf Islands team, and Timberline (Campbell River).
On Saturday morning, the Ice swept past Ballenas (Parksville) and Ladysmith, setting up a championship
match against Wellington from Nanaimo.
In a match fit for a title, the Ice prevailed in three sets, winning 25-19, 22-25, 15-11.
“The entire team contributed to this weekend’s championship, with these players leading the way,” said assistant coach Kevin East in a press release. “Carson East (39 kills, seven blocks, seven aces), Nick Lineger (30 kills, one block, six aces), Andon Bayles (23 kills, two blocks, six aces), Daxin Moldenhauer (11 kills, 14 blocks, five aces), Henry Holland (22 kills, blocks blocks, three aces), while Torr Robertson set for all matches and had 111 assists and also led the team in serving with 10 aces.”
Nest up for the Ice is the 2023 Vancouver Island championship tournament, which Isfeld is hosting on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17 and 18. The Isfeld team’s games on Friday are at noon against St. Michael’s, 2:30 p.m. against Ballenas and 6:15 p.m. against Lambrick Park.
The top 2 teams from the Island tournament will advance to the provincial championships on Nov. 29-Dec. 1 at Langley Christian school.
