Isfeld athlete sets new javelin record at BC High School Track & Field Championships

Isfeld distance runner wins both 1,500 and 3,000m races

Langley hosted the BC High School Track and Field Championships earlier this month, and Comox athletes rose to the occasion, with numerous medals, and a provincial record.

Gillian Galik of Mark R. Isfeld set a new junior women’s provincial record in the javelin with a throw of 42.54 metres, nearly a metre further than the previous mark.

She was joined on the podium by GP Vanier’s Erika Burry, who won the silver with a throw of 38.15m.

Comox Valley athletes dominated in the javelin competition, as Akira Munro of Highland won the senior women’s gold, with a throw of 39.30m. She won the bronze in 2022.

On the men’s side, Kayden U-Ming of Vanier won the silver in the senior javelin competition, with a throw of 55.99m.

Tyson Servos of Highland Secondary won silver in the junior boys javelin, with a throw of 43.70m. Servos won the silver in the Grade 8 division in 2022.

Payge Doty-Brown of Mark R. Isfeld won the silver medal in the junior women’s hammer throw, with a distance of 49.29m.

Galik also had a podium placement in the junior women’s discus throw with a distance of 31.38m.

She also fared well in the heptathlon, finishing first in the javelin (41.77m), second in the shot put (10.65m) second in the long jump (4.45m - .08m out of first) and second in the 800m run (2:51.55), en route to a fifth overall placing, with a score of 3789.

Cudmore tears up the track

Isfeld’s Indie Cudmore was a triple medal winner on the track, winning two events and placing second in another.

She took gold in the Grade 8 women’s 1,500-metre run with a time of 4:53.62 - more than four seconds clear of her closest competitor.

Cudmore crushed the competition in the 3,000-metre run, posting a winning time of 10:36.54 - more than 11 seconds ahead of the silver medalist.

Cudmore also won the provincial silver in the Grade 8 women’s 800-metre run, with a time of 2:24.95, beating her qualifying time by nearly two seconds.

On the men’s side, Highland’s Finlay Baggan placed second overall in the Grade 8 3,000-metre run, with a time of 9:35.89.
