Evan Irvine will be carrying on a Mark Isfeld Ice tradition when he suits up for the 24th annual Vancouver Island Seniors Classic High School Basketball All-Star Games.
The smooth-shooting forward is the only Comox Valley player named to the three North teams that will take on their South counterparts this Saturday, April 2 at St. Margaret's School new gym in a showcase of graduating high school players.
"Evan is an exceptional student-athlete at Isfeld," said Ice basketball coach Colin Cunningham. "He was senior male athlete of the year in his Grade 11 year last year as a top player on our senior boys soccer, football, rugby and basketball teams.
"Specifically for basketball, Evan made huge improvements this year. He played virtually every minute of every game. He was a team leader, an intense competitor. He led the Ice in scoring, rebounding, minutes played, three-pointers made and field goal percentage. He definitely deserved this nomination," Cunningham added.
Irvine has been selected to the North Boys B team and is the latest Isfeld athlete to appear in the Classic.
Last year, Chelsea Olsen was MVP for the Girls North team while in 2008 Tyler Olsen was MVP for the Boys A North squad. In 2007 Keenan Milburn was Boys B North MVP and also high scorer with 19 points.
Other locals have also enjoyed success at the Classic. In 2009 Rylan Higginson of Highland was Boys A North MVP. In 2007 Ryan MacKinnon of Highland was high scorer for the Boys A North squad with 24 points.
In 2001 Brandon Ellis of G.P. Vanier was high scorer for the Boys A North team with 22 points, and in 1988 Kevin Jangula of Highland was MVP for the Boys North team.
