The Comox Valley Glacier Kings had a great second period Friday night when they took on the Peninsula Panthers.
Unfortunately for the Yetis, the Panthers played a great first and third period, and that gave them a 6-4 win in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League action at Peninsula.
The Panthers outscored the Glacier Kings 3-0 in both the first and third periods, while the visitors did all their scoring in the second stanza. The Glacier Kings outshot the Panthers 38-33 with Brady Berisoff (picking up the win) and Nick Babich splitting the netminding for Peninsula while James Davison and Cameron Waddington (tagged with the loss) seeing action between the pipes for the Icemen.
Joe Densmore scored twice to take over the league goal scoring lead with 28 while league leading scorer Evan Campbell added two goals and one assist for the Panthers. For the Yetis, Stewart Lee recorded three assists, Kelin Hrycuik had one goal (his 27th of the season) and one assist while Mitch Ball (21st), Jackson Garrett (sixth) and Garrett Brandsma (eighth) netted the other goals.
Comox Valley went 0-for1 on the power play while Peninsula was 2-for-3 with the man advantage.
The Glacier Kings have a busy weekend ahead of them. On Friday they host the Oceanside Generals (7:30 p.m. Sports Centre Arena #1 and on Saturday they pay a visit to the Kerry Park Islanders.
On Sunday the VIJHL鈥檚 best and brightest are getting together in Courtenay when the Glacier Kings host the 2010-11 All-Star Game and Prospects Game, a full day of hockey that also includes a skills competition and banquet.
The North Island division leading Glacier Kings have six All-Stars and five Prospects in action. Skating with the North All-Stars will be defencemen (and team captain) Colton Ruthven and James Bryant, forwards Jack Kennelly, Kelin Hrycuik and (assistant captain) Mike Graham and goalie Cameron Waddington.
The North Prospects will feature Glacier King defencemen Brian Rideout and (team captain) Joe Ftoma along with forwards Cole Schneider, Tyson Rennie and Mitch Ball.
Both North Island teams will feature an all-Comox Valley behind-the-bench presence with coach Jim MacLean being joined by assistant coaches Steve Ruthven and Jordan Butcher along with trainer Tom Trainor.
Organizers say the skills competition will feature one All-Star and one Prospect from each team, and a Glacier Kings鈥� spokesperson said Prospect Mitch Ball and All-Star Kelin Hrycuik will represent the host team in the event.
Each competitor will take part in three events, which at press time included shootout, rapid fire and speed skating. Fitness Etc. is sponsoring the skills competition and game MVPs while RBC is sponsoring the Hockey Heroes 鈥� an unsung hero from each of the All-Star and Prospect game teams.
The Prospects play at 1:30 p.m. with the skills competition at 3:45 p.m. and the All-Star game at 4:30 p.m. All the action is at Sports Centre Arena No. 1. The banquet is at the Florence Filberg Centre with doors open at 10:30 a.m.
Banquet tickets are $30 per person. All-Star game tickets and Prospects game tickets are adult $10, senior/student $8 an children $6. Tickets for both games are adult $15, senior/student $12 and children $9. Hospitality Room tickets are $10 per person.
A Special Events Pack for $45 includes one banquet ticket, one Prospect game ticket and one All-Star game ticket.
