Glacier Kings' goals help Community Foundation

The last whistle has blown on the Comox Valley Glacier Kings’ 2010-11 regular season, and the team’s goal scoring this year has left a legacy that will live on in the community for years to come.

Thanks to the Glacier Kings’ prowess in the offensive zone this year, Meyers Norris Penny LLP (MNP) Chartered Accountants & Business Advisors has donated $1,170 to the Comox Valley Community Foundation (CVCF). The donation comes through MNP’s ‘Score for the Community’ promotion announced at the start of the season.

“This is the first year that MNP has sponsored the Glacier Kings and we wanted to do something special that rewards the team’s success and supports the community at the same time,” said Joe Renooy, a business adviser with MNP. “We’re very thankful to everyone at the Glacier Kings for helping us raise money to support the Community Foundation. This was a true win-win partnership.”

Back in September, MNP pledged to donate $10 to the Community Foundation for every goal the Glacier Kings scored at home during the regular season. The team racked up 117 goals at the Comox Valley Sports Centre this year, bringing MNP’s total regular season donation to $1,170. MNP presented the cheque to the CVCF prior to the opening face-off at the Glacier Kings first home playoff game on Feb. 22.

But the promotion hasn’t ended there.

To help cheer on the Glacier Kings during the post-season, and provide even more financial support to the Foundation, MNP  pledged to double their donation to $20 for every goal the Glacier Kings score at home during the VIJHL playoffs.

In their two post-season series the Icemen tallied 13 goals at home, adding another $260 to the Community Foundation coffers.

“We at the Comox Valley Community Foundation are thrilled with both the success of the Glacier Kings this year and this generous initiative of Meyers Norris Penny,” said Foundation president Lorne Harder. “Our mandate is to use earnings from these donations to enrich the quality of life in this community and with this kind of teamwork supporting us, the people in the Comox Valley are clearly the winners. Glacier Kings and Meyers Norris Penny, you really have scored for this community. Go Kings!”

“On behalf of the Glacier Kings organization, I would just like to say that it has been a pleasure and a privilege for our team to have been given the opportunity to be a part of this fundraising initiative,” added Glacier Kings’ owner Marsha Webb. “We appreciate the generosity of Meyers Norris Penny, and look forward to perhaps having the chance to participate again next season.”

All of the money raised through the promotion will be donated to Meyers Norris Penny’s named fund with the foundation. Since establishing the fund in 1997, MNP has contributed more than $47,000 to the foundation.

Founded in 1996, the CVCF provides an opportunity for people to contribute to a permanent endowment fund aimed at enriching the quality of life in the Comox Valley. Using investment income generated by the endowment fund, the foundation distributes grants to a wide variety of non-profit organizations working in the areas of arts and culture, environment and parks, health and welfare, education and youth, and seniors.
