The Dodge City Rollers (DCR) hosted the Comox Valley鈥檚 very first roller derby event on Sunday.

The team was split into white shirts versus black shirts, with each team borrowing two skaters from Victoria鈥檚 veteran league. The white shirts immediately dominated the track with an early 9-4 lead. By the end of the first period, the black shirts had clawed back to make it 20-11. The second period was a heated battle, as each team kept scoring points, and the skaters stepped up their game. In the end, the black shirts earned a 42-39 victory, despite their obvious handicap of being short one player.

Sunday鈥檚 bout was a 鈥渄ry run鈥� of sorts; a chance for the team to organize its many referees, timers, volunteers and supporters to come together to make a successful event. A standard roller derby bout features 14 players per team, a minimum of four referees, and a myriad of support staff (timers, non-skating officials, concession, merch, tickets, etc.).

The DCR look forward to  hosting and travelling to compete with the roller derby teams from Squamish, Vancouver Island, and the mainland for their upcoming 2011 season.

The DCR would like to send out a warm thank you to the guest skaters and refs from Victoria: Beaver Canoe, Trouble, Mount鈥檔 Kooger, Mikko Suave and the Dutch Dangler.
