The École Mark R Isfeld junior boys’ volleyball team won gold at the Annual VIU volleyball tournament in Nanaimo.

The team finished first in its pool with wins against Dover Bay, Duncan Christian and Timberline. This got the Ice a bye to the semifinals where they met a talented team and cross-town rivals from GP Vanier. Isfeld came out on top once again giving them a spot in the gold medal game against one of the strongest volleyball high schools in the province, Claremont Secondary.

With consistent play from all players and strategic coaching from Arlen Kanary, the teams were back and forth all match long. The ice won the first set 25-22 giving them some confidence moving into the second set. Once again the teams exchanged points until Claremont pulled ahead 21-18. With strong serving aces from Jonah Kanary the team tied it up and Kiefer Stushnoff’s aggressive ace serve with the set on the line gave the Isfeld Ice a 25-23 win and a two-set sweep.

“It was a complete team effort and the boys played extremely well, I’m very proud of them,” said coach Arlen Kanary.

GP Vanier finished with the bronze medal and the Highland Secondary team finished eighth.

The team’s next tournament is at Spectrum School in Victoria where the Ice will look to continue their development and prepare for the Island championships on Nov. 14-15 at VIU in Nanaimo.
