Courtenay wrestler wins fourth gold in as many tournaments

Unya Hollmayer, the captain of the GP Vanier High School wrestling team, is preparing to defend her provincial wrestling championship title and her under-19 national wrestling champion title.

On Saturday, Jan. 6, she won gold at the prestigious Dinos Cup wrestling tournament in Calgary, and on Sunday she helped team B.C. take first place at the Jurassic Classic by pinning her opponents and contributing max points to the team. Unya started the 2023-2024 wrestling season with a gold at the QMS Classic tournament in Duncan, a gold at the War on the Floor SFU tournament in Vancouver, and a gold at the Discovery Cup in Vancouver.

Many other members from the Comox Valley Wrestling Team have excelled this 2023-2024 wrestling season under the stellar tutelage from coach Ben Stehura, who has elevated the team to the next level.

The team has a few more tournaments ahead of the provincial championships, to be held in Vancouver Feb. 22-24, and the nationals held in Mississauga in April. There are high hopes that Comox Valley wrestling will send a strong contingent to both tournaments and surpass last year’s excellent results.
