Gold Winners included Pat Norrad, Beth Perrier, and Linda Meers winning the Quality Foods Ladies’ Triples in Qualicum, while Dean Penny, Vern Greenhill, Henri Saucier completed the Comox Valley sweep by taking home gold in the Quality Foods Men’s Triples in Qualicum. That tournament was held June 10-11.

On June 21/22, Comox Valley players Vern Greenhill, Henri Saucier, and Sandy Tonnellier teamed up to win the Berwick on the Lake 60+ Mixed Triples in Nanaimo.

And the team of Dean Penny and Brian Scherr won the Connect Hearing Classic Men’s Pairs in Courtenay, June 23-25.

“Courtenay hosted the last prestigious tournament and despite fierce competition from some of the finest bowlers on the Island, we have the honour of displaying the coveted trophy in our clubhouse for another year,” said Sandy Tonnellier, of the Courtenay Lawn Bowling Club. “Our sincere thanks to platinum sponsor Connect Hearing whose generous contribution helped defray costs for hosting this three-day event.”

Social bowling

Members who do not regularly compete in tournaments were also busy on Courtenay Lawn Bowling Club greens for the month of June. Michael Lynch hosted two 10 a.m. morning drop-in sessions that featured a shorter number of ends and different formats than regular play: Tuesday “3-5 ” and Thursday “Jack Attach.” These games allowed newer bowlers a chance to participate in recreational games and socialize with other members.

For the second year in a row, for six Monday mornings in June and July, our club has volunteered to assist young people from the Comox Valley L’Arche community to try the game. Judging from the laughter and eager participation by the group, it has been a great success.

Two leagues, Ladies’ Pairs and Mixed Pairs, which were held Monday and Thursday evenings respectively for the months of May and June, wound up last week. Two new leagues, Scotch Pairs (Tuesday) and Mixed Triples ( Thursday evening) will continue in July through August. The Wednesday evening Webber’s Singles league spans the entire season, culminating in the club singles’ championship tournament on Aug. 11-13.

The opportunity for members to drop in on Saturday and Saturday afternoons or set up games to challenge other members at any time are available as well.

A popular annual event is Inter Club, four bi-weekly evenings hosted in turn by Nanaimo, Qualicum, Courtenay and Parksville lawn bowling clubs. Two women’s teams and two men’s teams from each club travel to the host club to play a game and then enjoy snacks and socializing with fellow bowlers in our North Island Zone. The last of these will be held July 11 in Parksville at which time the club that scored the most points over the four evenings will be allowed to display the Inter Club trophy in their clubhouse for another year. Courtenay has held this honour many times in the history of the event and is keenly interested in continuing the tradition.

The club extends an open invitation to all members of the community to drop by its clubhouse at Bill Moore Park, 2361 Kilpatrick Ave., and see what the Courtenay Lawn Bowling Club is all about. The friendly members will be willing at any time to introduce you to the game of lawn bowls, a sport for life.
