After losing out on a day of racing due to rain, Saratoga Speedway’s annual Battle at Black Creek weekend turned into a one-day Sunday matinee for the LD Industries BC Late Model Series.

Originally scheduled for 125 laps, the race was shortened to 100 laps to enable the event to be finished on time for the venue’s noise curfew. Seventeen cars started the main event, with Daryl Crocker scoring quick time in his number 84 Ford Mustang.

When the green flag dropped, it was northern B.C. racers Sheldon Mayert and Trevor Adelman leading the field to the green. Mayert jumped out to an early lead, with the quicker qualified cars in the field having to make their way from mid-pack as a result of a 10-car inversion.

Victoria’s Kyle Cottam was able to find his way from the seventh starting spot to the front of the back, bringing Courtenay’s Kyle Wade and fast qualifier Crocker with him.

At the end of the 100 laps, it was Cottam who would cross the line in first to score his maiden BC Late Model win over Wade and Crocker. Jarret Bonn and Dan Ursel rounded out the top five.

For the final few laps, Cottam had to work hard to hold off Wade and the rest of the pack. When asked if the car was going away, Cottam was a little self-deprecating in his response.

“I think it might have been more of the driver,” said Cottam.

“I gave one of these away a few years ago when I finished second to Korbin (Thomas) at the Canada 200, so it feels good to win.”

Cottam pocketed $1,500 for his win in what was his first BC Late Model start of 2024.

Saratoga Speedway’s next race will be July 6th for Home Track Heroes featuring Crash to Pass, the Ace Brewing Bombers and the Kyte Delivery Service A & B Class Hornets.
