Led by Unya Hollmayer鈥檚 third provincial gold medal, and Alice Clements鈥檚 second consecutive silver, the GP Vanier girls placed third out of 136 schools at the provincial championships.
The tournament was held at the PNE Forum in Vancouver, Feb. 23-24.
Hollmayer made short work of the competition in the 47kg division, wrestling for a total of less than three minutes. She racked up four pins to win her second consecutive and third overall provincial gold medal.
Clements (54 kg) secured four falls as well, including one 10 seconds into the match, to earn her second provincial silver medal.
Her only loss came in the gold-medal match, falling to Rylie Chew, of Burnaby鈥檚 Cariboo Hill Secondary. Interestingly, Chew lost Hollmayer in last year鈥檚 47 kg championship match.
First-year wrestler Jolina Healey fought through a very talented bracket to earn a sixth-place finish. Alexis Acton and Kylie Cameron-Patterson also competed well into the tournament before coming up just one win each away from placing in the top 6 of their respective weight classes.
On the boys鈥� side, Jacob Price, of Vanier, showed tremendous grit on the road to his first provincial placement, winning six out of eight matches over two days to finish fifth.
Highland鈥檚 Ryan Nasadyk had an incredible run in the tournament, reaching the championship semifinals before falling to the eventual champion Arad Ahangi from Carson Graham Secondary. Nasadyk finished sixth in his weight class to earn his first provincial placement as well.
The rest of the Comox Valley wrestlers, along with the place winners, combined to win 31 individual matches at the championships this year as a testament to their hard work all season long. SD 71 will have a strong contingent of wrestlers returning next season to vie for more individual and team honours.
