The Comox Valley wrestlers were back in action competing in the QMS Christmas Classic Tournament in Duncan held on Saturday, Dec. 9. This is the first competition for the elementary wrestlers on the season.
The new season got off to a strong start with the team crowning 10 champions in the tournament. Kane Acton and Max Korthuis once again took home titles for Cumberland in their respective divisions.
They were joined by Drea Lascelle (Heritage Christian), Kylie Cameron-Patterson (Vanier), and in their first tournament of the year Unya Hollmayer (Vanier) and Jacob Price (Vanier) won gold as well. Hollmayer also competed in the SFU War on the Floor on Sunday and won her weight class there qualifying her for several B.C. and national events later in the season.
In the Elementary Division, Huband had a banner day crowning three champions in Inga Hollmayer, Thea Spragg, and Mathew Martin. Lily Martin earned a silver medal for Huband as well. Oscar Stehura (Puntledge) took first place and Abel Emery (Puntledge) earned a hard-fought silver medal. Rounding out the elementary competitors were Stella and Helen Stehura of Aspen Park taking home second- and third-place honours.
The tournament was capped off by a feature bout between the Grinch and Santa Claus. Santa won the day with a first-period fall and a huge round of applause from all in attendance. The team will see their first mainland wrestling competition in Vancouver at the Discovery Cup on Saturday, Dec. 16.
