The Comox Valley Lightning won a U15 hockey tournament in Campbell River, Nov. 24-27.

Over the weekend of Nov. 24-27, Campbell River Minor Hockey Association hosted a U15 tournament including eight teams from Port Hardy to Victoria.

The Comox Valley Lightning, undefeated in the tournament, won the gold medal game against Nanaimo on the final afternoon of the event.

It was a classic “nail-biter” right to the final buzzer, after the lead changed three times.

Nanaimo scored the opening goal, but Comox roared back and led 3–1 at the end of the first period. After two, it was 5–2 for Comox. In the third, Nanaimo scored four in a row, to take a 6-5 lead late in the game, and for a short time it appeared that Comox would snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. But Comox scored the equalizer with only minutes remaining in regulation time.

Team captain Shea Harris notched the winning tally in overtime, his fourth of the game. The final score was 7-6.

High scoring on both sides notwithstanding, superb goaltending by Logan Wannop was a huge factor in the game.
