Special to the Record
Comox Valley soccer standout Clara Jamieson has received an athletic scholarship to play for the University of Regina beginning in the fall.
She recently responded to a Q&A email for the Record. The following is the transcript of that interview.
When did you start playing soccer?
I started soccer when I was seven, but stopped for a year to focus on swimming. I took it up again at nine, and have stuck with soccer ever since.
What, or who, has inspired you to play soccer?
When I was little, I played soccer because my brother Jack was really into it, then continued because I fell in love with the game. At 14, I read Carli Lloyd’s autobiography and was immediately inspired to go as far as I can with soccer. Since then, I’ve never looked back, and I often use university or professional players as inspiration to improve and reach the next level. Celebrating with my family, teammates, and coaches after winning a big game or tournament reminds me why I put in the work I do. Knowing that I contributed to my team’s success inspires me to put in the work for next year, so I can support and push my new teammates next season.
What do you enjoy most about the game?
My favourite part about soccer is the process of improving. I love knowing that every goal I’ve scored, or that anything I do in a big game, is the result of the hours I’ve put into my training. I thrive on watching my hard work pay off, while also taking note of areas I need to improve. The challenge of always fighting to get to the next level drives me to push myself and constantly build my game.
Your thoughts about moving to the University of Regina?
Moving away from home will be a big adjustment, however, I’m very excited to enter the competitive training environment at the U of R. I’ve spoken with the coaches and a few players, and I know the high skill level there will allow me to show my ability while also challenging me to constantly improve. I’m looking forward to the difficulities of fighting for a roster or starting spot. I fully believe this will push me to new levels and remind me not to take any playing time for granted.
Regina is very different from Vancouver Island, and I think moving to a place where the land is different than what I’m used to will be another type of experience that will bring ups and downs. Overall, I’m extremely excited for the next chapter of my life.
Have your parents always supported you in soccer?
My parents have been incredibly supportive throughout my entire soccer journey. They’ve gone to every game they can, and have stood by me in any decision I’ve made, no matter how big or small. They were the first people to congratulate me when I chose to play for the University of Regina. My mom has been bench mom at my games for years, while my dad has filmed many with the club’s camera so I had footage to send to universities. My parents have always been my number one fans, guiding me in the right direction, while also allowing me to make decisions I know are best for my future.
