Comox Valley ski club shines at 2024 BC Cup Championships

The Strathcona Nordic Ski Club was well-represented with 30 athletes at the 2024 BC Cup Championships at the Larch Hills Nordic Society in Salmon Arm.

More than 500 athletes from B.C. and Washington State raced in classic, skate, and relay races over three days from March 1-3.

On the first day of racing, wax technicians faced difficult waxing conditions for the classic sprint race.

All athletes did a qualifier in the morning, followed by some intense and exhilarating heats in the afternoon. Notable performances from the sprints included Gavin Chatterton placing first and Soren Jakobsen placing second; Carly Ram placing second and Mariana Smith placing second in their respective sprint finals. Athletes raced distances varying from 200-800 metres.

The following day was an interval-start skate race with distances ranging from 1 to 11.5 kilometres. Notable results included: Soren Jakobsen second, Mariana Smith second, Gavin Chatterton first and Anna Chatterton second.

On Sunday, Strathcona skiers raced relays in teams of three. Two Strathcona Nordic teams finished on the podium. In the U10 boys category, Aidan Kapalka, Soren Jakobsen and Finley Warder finished third. In the U20 women’s category, Annika Bohac, Zainab El Amiri, and Carly Ram finished third as well.

A highlight from the weekend was the ’80s-themed dance and banquet held on Saturday night. Multiple athletes from Strathcona Nordics received Aggregate awards, awarded to athletes with the best cumulative results throughout the 2024 BC Cup series.

These included: Gavin Chatterton first, Amelia Moore first, Mariana Smith first, Anna Chatterton first, Aiden Kapalka third, Finley Warder fourth, Harper Harmatiuk fourth, Finn Jakobsen fourth, Leila El Amiri fourth, Carly Ram fifth, Bjorn Bohac seventh, and Elliot Warder eighth.

The Strathcona Nordic Ski Club ranked sixth overall out of 22 clubs in aggregate for the 2024 season.

For most of the younger racers, this was their last race of the season, while older athletes are off to race nationals in Ottawa from March 10-16.

Special thanks to all the coaches, wax technicians and parent volunteers for making this race weekend a success. It would not be possible without you.
