Comox Valley Kickers trio selected for BC Bears U19 team at national championships

The Comox Valley Kickers Rugby Club has reason to celebrate as three of their players have been selected to represent British Columbia as part of the BC Bears U19 XVs team at the upcoming 2024 U19 Canadian Rugby Championships.

The Comox Valley Kickers Rugby Club has reason to celebrate as three of their players have been selected to represent British Columbia as part of the BC Bears U19 XVs team at the upcoming 2024 U19 Canadian Rugby Championships.

The prestigious tournament, set to take place from July 27 to Aug. 4, will be hosted at Acadia University in Wolfville, NS.

The talented trio—Ava Perkins, Sarah Banks, and Sophia Julien—have earned their spots on the team, demonstrating exceptional skill and dedication to the sport. Ava, a formidable front-row player, will be anchoring the scrum with her strength and technique. Sarah, known for her powerful play, will be taking on the crucial role of lock. Sophia, a dynamic and versatile athlete, will be playing as a flanker, bringing energy and tenacity to the field.

The Road to Nationals

Their journey to the national stage has been marked by rigorous training and outstanding performances throughout the regular season and in development camps throughout the summer. Each player has shown remarkable progress and resilience, rightfully earning the recognition needed to be selected for the provincial squad.

Tournament Schedule

The BC Bears will face tough competition in the U19 Canadian Rugby Championships, with a series of matches lined up against other provincial teams. The match schedule is as follows:

  • July 30: BC vs. Ontario
  • August 1: BC vs. Atlantic
  • August 3: BC vs. Quebec
  • August 4: BC vs. Alberta

Community Pride

The selection of Ava, Sarah, and Sophia has brought immense pride to the Comox Valley rugby community. Outgoing Comox Valley Kickers Women’s Captain, Natalie Nguyen, expressed her excitement and support for the players.

“We are incredibly proud of Ava, Sarah, and Sophia for making it to the BC Bears U19 XVs team. Their hard work and dedication have paid off, and we are confident they will represent our club and province well at the national championships.”

As the tournament approaches, Ava, Sarah, and Sophia are focused on their preparation, aiming to bring their best performance to each game. Their participation in the U19 Canadian Rugby Championships not only showcases their individual talents but also highlights the strength and potential of rugby in the Comox Valley. Two other individuals from the Comox Valley, Brooke and Paige Horsfall, were also chosen to be part of the squad. They are currently playing with Westshore RFC.

Play with Us

On Tuesdays during the summer, the Comox Valley Kickers play touch rugby at 6:30 p.m. at Woodcote Park. This version of minimal-contact rugby is accessible to players of all ages, fitness levels, and backgrounds. No previous experience is required.

Cleats are recommended, but not mandatory. No other equipment is needed. They are also hosting their second annual Co-Ed Touch Rugby Tournament on Aug. 17.
