The Comox Valley Kickers Rugby Club hosted their second annual co-ed touch rugby tournament Aug. 17 at Lewis Park.

The event brought together teams from across the region for a day filled with friendly competition, community spirit, and sunny weather.

Six teams participated in the tournament, including three from the Comox Valley and one from Powell River, Oyster River North, and Nanaimo. The tournament followed a 6v6 format, with a minimum of one female on the field at a time. Each team was guaranteed three games with the top 4 teams advancing to the semi-finals. The Nanaimo Hornets took home the coveted trophy, with a 3-2 victory over the White Cobras. Oyster River North Exceptional Rugby Yahoos or “ORNERY” took third place.

The success of the tournament was made possible by the hard work of dedicated volunteers. Special thanks go to Jess Nikkel for managing the scoreboard, Jessica Leck for handling ticket and merchandise sales, Kaitlyn Hazelman for keeping the beer garden running smoothly, Talon Peters and Steve Hextall for their BBQ skills, and Natalie Nguyen and Jesse Ramsay for their coordination efforts. The Kickers would also like to recognize the referees, who maintained fairness throughout the day.

The Comox Valley Kickers extend their heartfelt thanks to Alitis Investment Counsel for their generous donation of gift cards that were used as prize draws.

As the touch rugby season comes to a close, the Kickers would like to thank their 2023/2024 sponsors, whose contributions have been instrumental in the club’s success. Looking ahead, the Kickers are eager to welcome new sponsors for the 2024/2025 season. Interested parties can reach out to to learn more about sponsorship opportunities.

For those inspired by the event and interested in playing contact rugby, for August, practices will be at Woodcote Park from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays.
