Jets win! Jets win! Jets win!
Comox Valley Jets teams served notice to the rest of B.C. over the past couple of weeks that baseball is alive and well in the Comox Valley.
The 11U Jets were particularly impressive, with two teams winning Island championships, and one winning provincial gold.
11U AA Jets provincial champs
The 11U AA Jets are officially the best AA team in B.C. after winning the provincial championship in Surrey on Aug. 6.
The Jets went 2-2 in round-robin play, beating White Rock, 10-6, and Salmon Arm, 13-9, and losing to Aldergrove, 15-5 and Richmond City, 11-10.
They were one of three teams to finish tied atop the division with a 2-2 record, and advanced to the medal round by virtue of tiebreakers. (White Rock, who lost both their games to the other contending teams, was the odd team out.)
The Jets and Aldergrove advanced to the medal round, and met in the championship game, where Comox Valley avenged the round-robin loss with a thrilling 15-13 victory for the crown.
The team got to the provincial championship tournament via its Island championship the previous weekend in Duncan. The Jets went undefeated in that tournament.
11U AAA Jets shine in debut
The 11U AAA Jets hosted the Tier 1 Island championships on the July 29 weekend, winning gold and advancing to the provincial championships, Aug. 4-6 in Kelowna.
The Jets beat Nanaimo 16-6 in Sunday’s semifinal, then defeated Victoria 3-2 for the Island title.
“This is the first time the CVBA has competed in, and won, the Tier 1 division Island Championship,” said the CVBA in a press release.
In their inaugural provincial championship appearance, the AAA Jets went 1-3 in pool play, beating Kamloops, 13-8, in the tournament opener, Friday morning, before dropping a 10-5 decision to Abbotsford in the afternoon.
The Jets dropped an 11-8 decision to White Rock on Saturday morning, then closed out their tournament with a tough 7-6 loss to Chilliwack Saturday evening.
More Jets teams win…
The 13U Jets are one of five Island teams to have qualified for the 13U A West Provincial Championship, Aug. 10-13 in Parksville. They will join Oceanside, Nanaimo, Port Alberni and Victoria at the tournament. White Rock, Ladner, Vancouver Community, TriCity and Tsawwassen will represent the Lower Mainland at the tournament.
Finally, the 9U Jets took first place in the 2023 Summer Smash in Nanaimo over the August long weekend.
As the 9U Jets made their way through the tourney round-robin stage it was during the playoffs on Sunday where the Jets showed their true grit.
In the tourney’s semifinal game the Jets beat the undefeated, top-ranked team on Vancouver Island, the Oceanside Reds, by a score of 12-6 to secure a berth in the finals.
After a hard-fought final against Gordon Head (Victoria) the Jets’ momentum proved too tough to beat, winning the final by a score of 4-2 and capturing 1st place at the 2023 Nanaimo Summer Smash Baseball Tournament.
The 9U Jets also cleaned up at the tournament skills competition with wins in the Home Run Derby, Base Race Relay and Throw Relay Race.
