The Zone 6 curling team, with four of the five curlers coming from the Comox Valley, won the silver medals at the BC Winter Games in Quesnel, Feb. 22-25.

Nicholas White of Nanaimo skipped the team to a 3-0 record in the preliminary round, teamed with third Presley Crerar, and second Liam Shelin, both of Comox, and lead Xen Boler of Cumberland. The team’s fifth, Roy Peters, hails from Cumberland.

The Zone 6 team lost to Zone 2 (Thompson-Okanagan, skipped by Owen Jaeger) 7-3 in the gold medal draw.

Team coach Lana Riva-Crerar was excited by the result. “We’ve been working towards this all season and to see all their hard work and dedication pay off is fabulous,” she said. “We have to thank our great sponsors, Ketza Pacific Contracting, Comox Valley Pharmacy, Crown Isle Resort, Cumberland Ready Mix, Edgett Excavating and Ryan Williams ReMax Real Estate who made it all possible.”

The team was also awarded the Wayne Harris Memorial Scholarship, a fund created to benefit junior curlers by the late Wayne Harris, former Comox Valley Curling Club president.

The Comox junior boys’ competitive curling team is based out of the Comox Valley Curling Centre and is coached by Riva-Crerar, Mark Taylor, Jason White, and Ron Fulkirth. It comprises nine curlers from the Comox Valley, Campbell River, Nanaimo and Duncan.
