The Wayne Harris rink went 1-6 at the 2011 B.C. Senior Men's Curling Championship, held Feb. 22-25 at Kamloops.
The Comox Valley quartet (skip Harris, third Richard Tanguay, second Alan DeJersey, lead Richard Thomson, fifth Stewart Larson) got off to a great start, defeating Myron Nichol of Castlegar 10-3 in their first draw on Feb. 22. That would be their only victory, but they had many close losses.
In a tough draw 2 setback, Harris gave up four in the 10th end to Gary Gelowitz of Kelowna in a 9-6 loss. On Feb. 23 Harris lost 9-3 to Greg McAulay of Richmond and 8-6 to Rob Ferguson of Trail as Ferguson scored two in the ninth end.
On Feb. 24 Harris lost 7-4 to John Shephard of Williams Lake and 8-6 to Sandy Greig of Richmond, with Greig scoring one in the ninth and three in the 10th.
Harris wrapped up play on Feb. 25, dropping a 9-5 game to Dean Thulin of Campbell River.
Final standings were Gelowitz 6-1, McAulay 6-1, Ferguson 4-3, Thulin 4-3, Greig 3-4, Nichol 2-5, Shephard 2-5, Harris 1-6.
McAulay’s round-robin loss to Gelowitz dropped him back into the semifinal. McAulay defeated Ferguson in the semi 12-5, and scored four in the eighth end of the final game against Gelowitz to seal the win by a final score of 8-3. He now advances to the Canadian championships in Digby, Nova Scotia, March 19-26.
