The Comox Valley Curling Club hosted their annual Mixed Open Bonspiel this past weekend, with 28 teams from around the Island competing for great prizes and the glory of winning one of the four events.
The Mike Finneron A event was an all local final with Dan Brennan’s rink of Dan, Andrea Folk, Duncan McGeorge and Lynn Dashkewytch defeating the Veitch rink (Randy, Kim Jonnson, Dennis Colburn and Mickie Colburn). Third in the A was Al Wall’s rink from Campbell River and fourth went to Brent Aitken’s squad.
Kevin Robarts’ local rink of Jana Bristol, Rick Aker and Cheryl Decrane won the Thrifty Foods’ B event, defeating Dale Geohring of the Riva rink in the final. Dale’s team consisted of Andrea Kosa, Pat Riva and Nancy Riva. Stu Larson’s rink was third and Wayne Harris’ rink finished fourth.
Ray Michell took home the Boston Pizza C event with an exciting victory in two extra ends over Don Pennell from Campbell River. Michell’s team consisted of Melanie Rait, Jade Jensen and Mare Michell, while Don had Gloria Roze, Rick Thomson and Darlene Sloan. Shawn Holland’s rink came in third and Richard Tanguay’s rink was fouth.
Steve Whynott’s team of Eileen Morin, Bernie Morin and Gloria Sandberg won the Lisa Jorgensen of ReMax D event over local curler Paul Kingan. Kingan’s squad consisted of Lynne Damen, Marv Damen and Kathy Branch. Darren Richard’s rink was third and Ken Rodonets and his rink finished fourth.
Debbie English, Mixed League president and organizer of the bonspiel, thanked the event sponsors, donations by Crown Isle Golf Course, Oh Spa, Ana Rosa Bermudez, the Comox Golf Course and all the people who volunteered, for making this bonspiel an event to remember.
