A battle of undefeated rinks at the 2025 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials in Liverpool, NS went to the Toronto team.
Lisa Weagle and John Epping defeated the Vernon father/daughter duo of Jaelyn Cotter and Jim Cotter 10-8 Tuesday morning, Dec. 31, to improve to 3-0.
The Cotters fell to 2-1.
The roller coaster match saw the Cotters jump out to a 2-0 lead after the opening end. Weagle and Epping responded with four in the second to take a 4-2 lead, only to watch father and daughter respond with three in the third, and a steal of one in the fourth for a 6-4 lead at the intermission.
Weagle/Epping came back from the break to score three in the fifth for a 7-6 lead. The Cotters replied with a deuce in the sixth end for an 8-7 lead, which would be their last of the contest.
The Ontario duo scored a pair in the seventh for a 9-8 bulge, and capped off the game with a steal of one in the final end.
The Cotters improved to 2-0 Monday with a 7-5 extra end victory over the reigning Canadian mixed doubles champions, Kadriana Lott and Colton Lott from Gimli, Man.
Team Cotter and Team Lott are tied for third in Pool B at 2-1 while Weagle/Epping and the duo of Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant of Calgary sit atop the pool at 3-0.
Jim and Jaelyn Cotter will face the team of Melissa Adams and Alex Robichaud of Fredericton (0-3) at 3:30 p.m. Pacific Tuesday.
The Trials (which conclude Jan. 4) feature 16 teams in two pools of eight with the winning team representing Canada at the April 26-May 3 in Fredericton, N.B.
That event also in Italy, and if Canada qualifies for the Games, it will be the Trials winner in Liverpool who will wear the maple leaf in Italy.
