Dear editor,
On Christmas Eve your paper published a very negative rant against former Comox councillors, written by someone who has never held public office during my years in the Valley.
Diatribes such as this are hurtful and damaging, when what is needed in this complex world is open and respectful governance, based on a healthy exchange of information between those elected and the citizens they represent.
It is encouraging to see the interest in serving their community that is evidenced by several newcomers to politics, and hope for all our sakes that they maintain this interest and enter the next election. Their voices are needed in this time of change.
I have huge respect for the amount of time and patience it takes to acquaint oneself with the amount of information on complex issues that face those elected to represent their communities and rural areas, and appreciate the hard work they do on our behalf.
I was pleased to see Barbara Price put her name forward for Comox council. She has the experience, training and ability to work with people on a wide range of issues.
Her past experience on Comox council and three terms as director for Area B has shown that she knows how the system works, and can use her skills to bring about change. She sticks to the issues, follows through and knows how to listen.
Barbara’s record on environmental issues is very strong; a grassroots leader who worked tirelessly with others to protect and maintain the Comox Lazo Forest Reserve and other
cherished nature spots.
Her early work in establishing Heritage Days in Comox and continuing with the Archives and Museum, her work on local and provincial boards on a wide range of issues that affect all of us have given her invaluable skills that will be a great asset to Comox council and its citizens.
I wish her success in her bid to serve, and only regret that she is no longer my representative on the regional board. I know that if anyone brings a concern to her attention, they will receive a civil, well-researched response.
