Dear editor,

Talking to people and reading the various comments in the paper, it seems clear that Comox residents are looking for new ideas and a fresh face in this Saturday鈥檚 byelection to fill the seat of the late Ray Crossley.

With that in mind, I took the time to examine more closely the qualifications of the four new candidates (I agree that the four repeat wannabees have little to offer).

All four candidates are deserving of our respect and appreciation for the interest they have shown in our community. Recognizing that a full election is scheduled for this fall, it would seem to make sense that a new councillor could be valuable not only for an enlightened approach, but also to gain experience in preparation for the next three-year term.

Although each of them bring their individual qualities to the table, in my mind there are two that stand out and offer some real promise for our town 鈥� Hugh MacKinnon and Pat McKenna. The similarity in surnames may well confuse some voters, and result in casting their vote for 鈥淢c instead of Mac鈥� or vice versa.

Hugh MacKinnon is a longtime educator and administrator who has been active with a number of charitable organizations and community activities over the years. His leadership and kindness have touched many of the children who have passed through his schools.

Pat McKenna is the manager of Home Depot. Since his arrival in Comox, he has been involved with theatre, musical and charitable groups throughout the Valley.

Looking things over, it is clear that Comox would be well-served by either of these two outstanding individuals. For me, the decision comes down to business experience and understanding the financial challenges facing the town at the present time.

On that basis, my vote has to go to Pat McKenna whose experience and knowledge of management would undoubtedly be an asset to this council. In short, it鈥檚 Mc over Mac in a very close race.
