Dear editor,
There are many examples of one disease helping prevent or cure another, including a local example.
Cowpox prevents smallpox. Cystic fibrosis prevents cholera and tuberculosis. Myasthenia gravis prevents rabies.
Phages are viruses that infect bacteria.
Each is a terrible disease, but with a silver lining.
Here in Comox, we have such a plague phage: COVID-19. As fearsome as it is, at least it has removed the pestilence in our skies, the grating noise pollution of tow planes pulling military gliders, non-stop, every day, all summer, year after year.
I hate you COVID, but I appreciate that you have made this Comox summer a peaceful place once again.
Jamie Bowman,
Comox
