Dear editor,
Re: Empty Courtenay car lot would be ideal spot to serve the homeless (Nov. 15 letter)
Imagine my surprise to read a letter to the editor proposing an idea I had a few months ago about using the vacant car lot behind 7/Eleven as a safe and secure area for those who find themselves homeless.
And this from a self-described homeless person as well!
There is an empty building at this location which I assume has all the necessary utilities already in place to provide a warm shelter in winter and plenty of room for a dorm. I don’t see why it couldn’t include space for some counselling by health professionals for those who seek it out.
There is also a fenced-off area for those who prefer to camp. Security would be required similar to that at the Connect cCentre presently. I presented this proposal by email to city council and received replies from three council members, which was appreciated, but the general feeling was that it would be expensive and “difficult to manage.” Is it not already difficult to manage?
I think the recent repurposing of the former motel on Cliffe Avenue is a step in the right direction and I’d like to see one of our empty car lots put to better use.

Courtenay
