LETTER - Canada Health Transfer deal gives provinces carte blanche on how to spend the money

Dear editor,

Dear editor,

Just to be clear. The March 1 federal government’s Canada Health Transfer deal of $46.2 billion over 10 years looks pretty sweet at first glance.

But, as it has since 1995, it comes with little or no requirement for the money to actually be spent on our broken, toxic health-care system. The agreement requires only 58 cents of every dollar need be spent on health care. Not only that: get this! The provinces do not even have to show how the money is spent.

My bet? Politicians who are looking to get re-elected will use most of these funds to cut taxes. Quality health care will be left to continue its steep downward spiral into becoming nothing but a memory that we baby boomers will cherish.

These funds should come with absolute caveats that mandate 100 per cent of these funds be spent on health care. And that the public should be totally informed on how those funds are spent. If you agree, take a moment and let our provincial premier know that we demand better and that we are indeed watching.
