LETTER - Action4Canada visit an embarrassing moment for the Comox Valley

web1_231102-chc-graham-letter-firefighters_1

Dear editor,

October 26 was a shameful moment for the Comox Valley when we were visited by a right-wing, conspiracy-driven hate group hosted by a local evangelical church (Bay Community Church).

Any organization that spreads bigotry, hate and disinformation should not be receiving a penny in tax exemptions.

The K’omoks First Nation showed leadership in unequivocally denouncing these groups for their unacceptable and harmful words and actions. Thankfully local municipalities came out in support of the KFN, affirming support for reconciliation and diversity.

I look forward to seeing a co-ordinated and comprehensive review of municipal policies on permissive tax exemptions. Because where there are organizations with questionable methods, and that may seek to manipulate or indoctrinate the vulnerable, permissive tax exemptions lend the organization credibility that they might not otherwise have.

As well as giving them that extra boost of funding to do harm.

Wanda Thompson,

Courtenay
