Legal action in Union Bay not cheap

Dear editor, Earlier in April, there was an article in the Record which made mention of the legal costs of the Supreme Court action initiated by several past and present trustees and administrative staff of the Union Bay Improvement District against a landowner in that community.

Dear editor,Earlier in April, there was an article in the Record which made mention of the legal costs of the Supreme Court action initiated by several past and present trustees and administrative staff of the Union Bay Improvement  District against a landowner in that community. At that time, your reporter conjectured that the cost of the court action was upwards of $20,000.Recently, through the Freedom of Information Act, it has been established that up to Feb. 23 when the request under FOI was submitted, the taxpayers of Union Bay faced legal bills amounting to $68,225.No current figures have been volunteered for this case which has not yet come to trial. This sum is rather startling when you consider that Union Bay is composed of less than 700 households.Appropriate spending from the public purse is amongst the chief duties of government of all levels. This little community is facing large infrastructure costs within UBID’s mandate of providing fire protection, street lighting and issues pertaining to water. We don’t remember being consulted at any time about extending that mandate to include suing landowners.Dennis and June Haner,Union Bay
