HAVE YOUR SAY: Thanks, Costco, for giving me a job

Hooray to Costco for giving me a job!!

Hooray to Costco for giving me a job!! I have been looking for work for a year and finally found the right employer. Sure they may not pay the best to start at entry level but in three or four years I can be making $20 an hour or more — in this town! I overheard that they had 3,500 applicants so far — can you believe it? I think there were about 200 jobs available, after 100 or more Costco employees with seniority transferred in so the location had experience. You have treated me well already, so once again, thanks to Costco!

The Salvation Army would like to send a bouquet of thanks to the Presbyterian Church, A-Maizing Kettle Corn, Walmart, Little Caesar’s, Comox Valley Bakehouse, and the patrons of Thrifty Foods and the Courtenay and Comox QF for the faithful donations that augment the food packages we distribute.

My family and I congratulate the students who received the Ron Bannerman Memorial Medal award this year. My husband considered learning about the early days of the Comox Valley, studying the development of the economy, and celebrating the heritage of our ancestors as vital to understanding our present-day lives. He hoped to have his students 'catch the spark' and come to love history as he did. This award honours the memory of Ron for us all. He would be so proud of you. Thank you so much.

Thanks to Courtenay’s Finneron Hyundai. We would like to thank our salesman Matt and all his co-workers for such warm, wonderful, personable service during our purchase of our new Santa Fe. Best service ever!

The North Island Rhododendron Society (NIRS) thanks everyone who contributed to making our rhododendron sale (May 1) and Mother’s Day Garden Tour (May 8) so successful this year. This kind of annual support by the public helps our club to continue not only holding informational and esthetic events like this but to also groom and provide (along with the City of Courtenay) the Comox Valley Rhododendron Garden located behind the tourist bureau at the Courtenay Airpark for residents and guests. Our NIRS members are always happy to share what they know about rhododendrons at our monthly meetings and to provide tips on the horticultural bounty we all enjoy. For our two events, thanks go to the K’ómox Band, which allowed us to use their hall for our sale, to the vendors who bring along a wide selection of plants and to the many volunteers who keep a busy event clicking along without chaos. Despite the late spring, which brought on a certain blooming reluctance, our Mother’s Day Tour was a huge success with visitors that came from as far away as Chicago. Thanks go to all the hosts who groomed their gardens to perfection to the delight of the many guests: Robert Argall, Bob and Adela Smith, Ann Chevrier,  Louise and Roger Casson, Bev and Ron Johnson, Antje and Peter Guertler and Maggie Warren. NIRS plans to host these events again in 2012 with its usual wealth of rhodos and companion plants at the sale and a selection of different lovely gardens for a perfect 2012 Mother’s Day.

Has stopping weed spraying of the railway tracks anything to do with hastening the rotting of the railway ties?

A big bouquet of blue irises to the folks who organized the recent "meet and greet" with the new B.C. Conservative party leader John Cummins. The opportunity to hear Mr. Cummins was not wasted on those who are concerned about the future of this province, and its wonderful to see that we now have a viable alternative to the dismal practices and policies of the other two povincial political parties. Thanks for this great effort.  It's good to see that democracy is now flourishing in the Comox Valley.

Thank you all for helping the Comox Valley Land Trust continue to conserve the natural wealth of the Comox Valley. Thank you to all the women who have worked at our local Women’s Resource Centre over the past 30 years, for their volunteers, their board members, their donors, funders and supporters. You will be missed and you can be proud of the difference you made in improving the lives of the citizens of the Comox Valley.
