Millar enjoyed a long career as a teacher/principal, admired by his peers. He graduated from UBC in the 30’s with degrees in Arts and Education. He began his career at Brooks High School in Powell River in 1938. He interrupted his teaching career to serve in the Royal Canadian Navy during WW2. After the war he returned to teaching in Vancouver, moving to the Comox Valley in 1952. He was a school principal with District 71 from 1952 to his retirement in 1975. Up until the time of his death, he continued to be in touch with former students and was well loved by them.
As an athlete he was memorable in the world of soccer playing for UBC and the North Shore United Football Club. Later he coached the UBC team. He could always be counted on for a game of tennis or golf and was active in athletic endeavours in the community. He enjoyed flyfishing in the Puntledge as well as ocean fishing. He played sweet keyboard music and, in his youth, played the bagpipes in a Vancouver Pipe Band.
