Surgenor, William George

Sept 9, 1913 - July 20, 2004

Known to family and friends

as “Tyke”

His wife Amy and two sons survive him, Bill (Linda) of California, John (Leah) of Cortes Island. Parents Bessie & William lived in Granite Bay, and Tyke was born in a row boat on the way to hospital at Rock Bay. Pre-deceased by sister Alice & brother Robert. Brother Earle and wife Georgina reside in Castlegar, B.C.

Tyke worked in logging camps all over Vancouver Island and had never lived off the Island except to serve with the Canadian Scottish during the war, building planes in Vancouver. Then overseas clearing minefields etc. He held a steam ticket and worked on “logies” as a fireman and brakeman.

Wife Amy also served overseas. She and Tyke were married in 1950. They lived in Royston until 1961, when they moved to Comox where they have resided ever since.

Tyke was very well-known in the community. He was a member of the Shrine, Masonic Order and the Comox Legion. He was an avid golfer at the Comox Golf Club, and a member in good standing of the Comox Mall coffee klatch. Those who knew him in his youth will remember his wonderful tenor voice. Following his retirement Tyke became a renowned carver of birds.

He will be sorely missed by his family and friends for his wry sense of humour, and ability to make others laugh.

COMOX VALLEY FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORIUM, 1101 Ryan Road, Courtenay entrusted with arrangements.
