In Loving Memory ~
It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Warren James McQuillan, who passed away on March 26th 2025 at the Aitken Community Hospice in Courtenay, BC.
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, teacher, and steadfast friend, Warren will be fondly remembered by many. Known as a "gentle giant, "Warren's 6'5" frame housed a conscientious and loving soul. His softspoken, kind manner put others at their ease, and he was a man of great thoughtfulness and integrity.
Warren was born on July 1st, 1941 at St. Joseph's in Comox to Robert and Dorothy (née Good) McQuillan, the second-youngest of 12 children. Warren's childhood and youth were spent enjoying the delights of the outdoors: sports at Lewis Park, fishing and swimming in the Puntledge, and idyllic summers exploring the shores of Kye Bay at the family beach cottage.
After high school, Warren earned a BSc in Mathematics from UBC, ultimately becoming a Math (and later Computers and Technology) teacher at several Lower Mainland high schools (West Whalley, Johnston Heights, and Fraser Heights). He and wife Lynne (née MacAulay) raised their children in Surrey—first Clayton, then Ocean Park—but summers always included a sojourn back to Vancouver Island. Coming full circle, Warren and Lynne moved back to the Comox Valley 8 years ago.
Warren loved sports and kept active throughout his life, playing and coaching basketball and playing recreational softball. In his retirement Warren enjoyed golfing, puttering in the garden, travelling to warmer climbs with friends and family, and ensuring all family pets were treated like royalty. A deep thinker, Warren kept his keen mind engaged with current affairs, crosswords puzzles, and he was always up for a game of cribbage, even in his final days.
Warren is predeceased by parents Robert and Dorothy, brothers Murray and Edwin, sisters Eleanor (Pettersen), Alma (Linton), Viola (Stranberg), and Doreen (Cooper).
He is survived by his loving wife Lynne, children Kelly (Tomy) and Ryan, grandson Rowan, and step-grandchildren Britany and Jeremy, as well as siblings Darrel, Marian (Sam), Helen, Leona, Bryce (Susan), and many nieces and nephews.
An informal celebration of life will be held sometime this summer for family and friends at Kye Bay, one of Warren's favourite places.
